My grandfather, Thomas Seery of Loughpark used to make baskets. He used to make them out of a rod named a sally rod. These rods grew in Woods and marshy land.
You have to cut these rods and put them in bundles. You have to put the big ones in one bundle and the little ones in another.First he cut eight rods then he put four rods like a cross and tied them tight. Then he would weave the small ones in and out through the big ones. He would continue this until he had the bottom made. Then he would put a whole lot of rods in on the sides of the bottom. this was the beginning of the sides. Then he got the small rods and weaved them to a certain height.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
