Long ago there were two sorts of beds in use - (a press bed) and (settle bed). A press bed is like a press in the day, there are two wooden latches on the top of it and when you open it, it is a bed.
A settle bed is like as wooden sofa in the day. It too could be let down for a bed at night. The settle bed is still in use and in this neighbourhood there are still about four beds.
Both settle bed and press bed were made by the local carpenter. Long long ago a sack of chaff in the corner often formed a bed.
