The blight came on the crop in the ground in july 1846. The smell of the decaying crop was terrible and you might dig half a field before you would get six good ones. The farmers kept seed in the next season but the blight was worse the following year. Potatoes called "Scottish Downs" were the first to be imported and planted after the famine.
