- When people are putting a young calf out for the first time they sprinkle holy water on it. Another custom is to hang palm or a horse shoe with the heels upwards in the stables to bring luck on the stock. When people are giving a hatch of eggs they sprinkle holy water on them for luck. When a cow calved the owner of the cow would give the beastings to a neighbour and when he was returning with the can he would put a fistful of salt in the bottom of the can.
