- Bread
People in Ireland long ago made different kinds of bread. The names of these were oaten cake, potato cake and boxty bread.
Potato cake was made from flour, salt, and boiled potatoes
Boxty bread was made from raw potatoes sliced and flour added.
The oaten cake was made from oaten meal, salt and milk. They baked the oaten bread on a griddle until it got firm.
Then it was put on a iron frame to bake for about a week until it was hard.
In the bog lands they sowed rye from which they made rye bread or black bread.
People grew a small quantity of oats and wheat to make their own meal and flour.
Long ago the nearest flour mill was at Mills of Louth.
Some people to the present day make their own meal by the use of hand griddle.
