- In olden times every farmer sowed a "pottle" of flax and the women made it into linen thread in their own homes. The flax was pulled and made into sheaves and thrown into a bog-hole to soften it. It was next spread in the field to bleach. It was gathered into bundles and dried over the ktichen fire. Next it was beaten with "Throwgeens" on the kitchen floor. The neighbours boys assisted at this work when in Cúaird. It was then stretched, that is, the husk was beaten off with a wooden knife over the back of a chair. It was then "cloven" with a "cloven" tongs. The "tongs" consisted of a shovel-handle with a groove about 18 inches long and 1 inch wide towards one end. A piece with sharp edges was fitted into this groove and fastened with a wooden peg at one end. The tongue moved freely in and out of the groove. The women sat on a bag or old coat on the floor with their legs stretched out. Each one grasped a Dúilín(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)
