  1. In former times the people in my district had to rely on their own crafty ideas to make or manufacture their requirements whether for sale or for their own use, and what would be considered now as crude methods were then thought to be the only way things could be done. For instance butter making was a slow tedious business to be engaged in. The new milk after being drawn from the cows was set in pans or keelers, until the cream would raise to the top, an event that would not occur for some days. The cream was then skimmed and collected and put into a churning barrel for hours until the butter would be separated
