    In 1840 the Protestant minister of Mitchelstown made an attempt to build a Prot. church in the present Catholic burial ground...

    had taken shelter in Madden's house a party of tinkers came into the village. They inquired for the public-house and the people directed them to Madden's just for fun. The tinkers knocked at the door, but getting no answer they knocked and pelted the door with their budgets and kicked up such a row that the Parson bolted out the back door, and in his fright, thinking that it was an attack on himself, he dashed across the river to hes soldiers.
    The leader of the soldiers, Captáin Farrer, inquired into the cause of the trouble, a local man named Sheely explained matters to him. The Captain asked if there was any other plot of ground to build on. Being told of the site of the present Protestant Church he withdrew his soldiers.
    The Kingstons built the present Protestant Church in 1844.
