To give an idea of the good discipline tehy had in these schools, our friend says two pupils were to leave school at the same time. To make sure that this rule be complied with, the pupil when leaving was to take a pass which he found at the back of the door and on his return he was to leave the pass in its place. Woe betide the boy or girl who returned to the door minus the pass. The pass at one school was the shin bone of a calf duly marked with the teacher's initials. In another school it was a cow's horns similarly branded so that it was difficult to obtain a substitute pass.

   One set of books did the entire family. When one was promoted to a higher class his book went to the younger one
