   I live in the townland of Ballykenny in the parish of Raheenagh, in the barony of Glenquin and in the county of Limerick. The local landlord in this district was the Earl of Devon. He was a descendant of the people who came over from England with Dermot McMurrough the King of Leinster. He lived at Powderham Castle at Devonshire. The people looked upon him as a good landlord. Captain Curling was his agent for collecting the rent from the tenants. He lived at Newcastle West which is situated about two miles from Monagea national school. There were no evictions in this district. The landlords of other places were very bad landlords. Tithes were collected in former times in my district for the protestants. The man that collected the tithes was called the tithe proctor. The tithe proctor in this district collected it for Mr. Willis. The house in which he was living is now occupied by Mr. Magner who bought it from Mr. Dickson. The tithe collector would value your crops. Tithe means the 1/10, if you had ten stooks of corn you should give him one or if you had forthy wynds of hay you should give him four and if you had no corn or hay
