Long ago the tailor used to go to the farmers’ houses to make clothes for the farmer and his children. The tailor used to take his lapboard, his shears, his goose, his needle and thimble with him. He used often stay in one house for a fortnight as it was with his hands he used to make the clothes because there were no sewing machines used at that time.
The clothes at that time were made of home-made freize. The tailor used to make also flannel vests and pants and also a garment called a flannel waistcoat or Bán-een (Báinín).
The tailor used to work for 2/6 per week and his board and lodging. His board consisted of – for breakfast – potatoes and milk; for dinner, stirabout made of yellow Indian meal; and for supper potatoes and milk and a few turnips.
