Two men out late one night saw a light in a certain house. They stole over to a window which was shuttered on the inside but about an inch apart. They saw an old woman sitting down in the middle of the kitchen milking two ropes from the joist of the loft. She got as good a supply out of the ropes as the would ever get from a cow.

    Pender’s Wood (Belvelly)
About ¼ mile eastwards from Belvelly is a young wood named Pender’s on the hill near Ballinacrusha. About 40 years ago there were two small farms here belonging to Penders and Houlihans, a third Walsh lived down in another near the road. These farms were taken over by Lord Barrymore – trees planted on sites occupied by first named (Pender, Houlihan) now forming Pender’s Wood, latter (Walsh’s nicknamed soggart) taken over for grazing. People still talk of the gate adjoining road (long since built in with stones) as “Soggarts” Gate). A few trees that grew round the house still remain.
