Ar an leathanach seo

  1. There are three forges in the parish. Daniel Enright ("Henerty") and his brother Patrick have one each. They are the third generation of smiths. Denis OCallaghan is the owner of the third.
    All three forges are at cross-roads. Enrights forges have slate roofs. OCallaghans forge partly slate & part wood.
    No special shape of door.
    One fireplace
    Bellows were not made locally.
    Implements - sledge, hammer, anvil, knives, rasp, tongs, pincers, vice, drill, chisels.
    Smiths shoe horses, asses; not cattle.
    Makes no farm implements, carry out repairs on all implements & machines
    Banding of wheels done in the open air first outside forge.
    No local beliefs regarding water or sparks.
    Forges continue to be meeting places for men in the evenings. Smiths were and are looked upon as being strong only in connection with the strength of their "stroke" that is their hammer blow.
