- The year the famine started was 1845 and lasted until the 1847. The district was very thickly populated before the Famine. People still point out sites of houses them occupied and now in ruins.
Government relief did not reach the district during the Famine. The potatoes were sown like grain. Potatoes were the main food of the people long ago and during the Famine they ate turnips mangolds and even the weeds from the road. People died in great numbers during the Famine years, and after the Famine a fever spread all over the over country called "Famine Fever.
