Where this path crossed the River Allow, about half a mile to the north of Allow bridge, there are still some very old stepping stones. People made use of this path in Penal Times when attending Mass at some appointed place in the district.
In 1823 and 1824 the main road from Charleville through Red Bog, Freemount and Newmarket to Ballydesmond was made. Labourers at that time were only paid sixpence per day. This was considered great hire. The usual rate of pay given by the farmers was two pence per day with diet which consisted of three meals of potatoes and sour milk There is an inscription in a limestone inscribed in the Allow bridge,
which reads:-
