Flop- guns were made from elder. This was done by cutting a piece of elder about 9 ins long and about 2 ins wide. Then the pit was scooped out with a piece of wire, the wire was heated and put into the hole to make, it fine. Then, get a piece of brown paper, wet it, and press it into the hole with a piece of an oak stick called the ramming stick.
Get another piece of paper, wet it, this is called the wad, blow into the gun and press the wad into the open end of the gun with the ramming stick. There is air in the gun and the pressure of the air drives the wad out with great force.
If the wad hit a bird it would kill it.
