1. The Planting of Potatoes up to Forty Years ago in this District (ar lean)

   or at least very little known and consequently not practised in the richer lands of the County.
   By this method, the land is ploughed, farmyard manure being spread in the furrow made by the turning of the second sod, and the manure is covered with a sod more lightly ploughed than either of the other two.
   This sod is "hacked" and "stuck" and the holes are closed. Some time after the whole field is levelled by means of a harrow. The stalks appear in rows, and when they are sufficiently high, a man goes between the rows with a horse and hoe or scuffler as it is called & digs furrows, after which the stalks are earthed up these forming drills similar to the raised drills made by breaking up the soil previously.
   I have been told that potatoes used to be planted in rough lands, in some such way as this.
   The place to be planted was usually a wild rough place growing wild furze or aiteann gaedhlach as it is called, or heather. This place was torn up by means of a grubber or grafán, and the sod burned.
