The field to be planted the following spring would be prepared the previous Autumn. A man was sent in, the fences were repaired, sides trimmed down and all briars etc cut.
Next, if the field were rich and loamy, this man had to dig a trench all around the field inside the fences with a spade made in the local blacksmith's forge, called a "spring" spade. This spade was usually about 20 inches long, made of steel, and narrowing towards the blade to make it easier to work.
I have seen similar spades in West Cork, and as far as I recollect they were shaped something like this. Socket for handle usually about 41/2 i.
