  1. There are seven ruined castles in the district. They are situated in the townlands of Camla, Dundonnell, Killeglan, Skevalley, Castlesampson, Shraduff and Clonbigney. They must be built by the Normans as guns were not in use during the time of the Danes, as the 'loop holes' are to be seen in the walls for the guns. They are situated in the parish of Taughmaconnell in county Roscommon and in the Barony of Athlone.
There is an old church in the townland of Shraduff. It is said that monks were living in it. There is an old monument in the townland of Skyvalley, it is called the 'Chimneys'. It is said that mass was read there in the penal times. There is also a Bishop's grave there whose name is Bishop Keogh he was beheaded in the penal times.
