After many months of this hardship the Government began to see to the interest of the people. They pleaded for the country and Indian meal was forwarded to the local railway station. It was distibuted to the poor and to those who were most in need of it. Relief works such as making by-roads were started in this district to give employment and men worked for a few pence per day and some them died by the ditches.
After the famine there came great sickness in which everyone was effected and many died. But the failure of the potato-crop was responsible for all this distress and whenever there is failure of potato-crop famine is due to follow.
