  1. About three miles north of Drimoleague there is an old Castle named Castle Donovan. It was built by one of the O' Donovans in the year 1560. It is about 60 feet high, 42 feet long and 26 feet wide. there are 91 steps in the south. It is said that when Cromwell's soldiers were going west along they fired a cannon. from the top of the rock and put this split in the south wall in the year 1650. No one lived in it since that.
It is built on a rock. There are mountains on three sides of it and a bog, or marsh on the other side, so that it is hard for any army to take it. The walls are very firm yet. They were built with store and mortar. The mortar was wet with the blood of animals. When this mortar hardened, it was as hard as a rock.
