  1. The Penal Laws were brought into force in 1698 and were not abolished until 1829. These laws prevented Catholics from having schools or from practising their religion. In short their object was to make the Irish people poor and ignorant both spiritually and corporally. A small number of priests were registered, and only these according to the law were permitted to say Mass.
