    ancient days,
    And boast about your thoroughbreds your black ones and steel-greys,
    But I'll tell you of a small bay mare she's the pride of Erin's shore,
    And is owned by one O'Beirne in the parish of Kilmore.
    II
    This celebrated racer has lately bore the sway
    And from the Elphin thoroughbreds I'm told she has ran away,
    Just like a hare before the hounds around the course she ran
    Some shouted Kirkwood's mare was first and others Mary Ann.
    III
    She led the way from pole to pole along the grassy plain,
    With Boylan spurring in the rear but not an inch could gain,
    The cheering ceased throughout the course that echoed in the town,
    That well contented race was o'ver and O Beirne's mare came down.
