- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)There are the ruins of an old castle in the district. It is situated in Walshe's field, and is surrounded by an orchard of apple trees. Beside the castle there was a great battle fought between the Fitzpatricks of Upper Ossory and the Butler's of Ormond. Ballykealy is hilly. On the hill we see the gorse and the purple heather. The rest of the land in Ballykealy is good, and is mostly tilled. The land is well watered. Several streams rise in springs in the hills and flow down in various directions. One stream long ago was strong enough to turn a mill. Both mill and stream have now disappeared.
Ballykealy has been the subject of one of Dorothy. M. Large's poems. Miss Large lived in Capponellan years ago. She gave Ballykealy its due in her poem.
The character of the landscape of this townsland is not particularly picturesque, but large liberal and prosperous.- Bailitheoir
