   system of the old people's houses was very primitive, it consisted of bogdeal splinters lighted and stuck in between two stones in the hob. As the supper was being eaten each person in turn had to hold the splinter while the rest were eating. The making of the splinters was usually assigned to the man of the house.
   By degrees the people came to use the tallow dip or home made candle. The sweeping brooms, that did duty in those days, were made of the heather from the bogs and the cleanliness of the houses at that time compare very favourably with the electric cleaned houses of the present day. The women of ancient Ireland believed in hard scrubbing and they would feel shocked, had they lived to see the huge sums of money spent now-a-days on labour saving devices.
