- There were many forges in Brosna district long ago.There was one where Mosey Connell now lives, owned by Tade Cronin an Uncle to Mike Cronin, which was burned. While laying a spade for Robert Noles, a spark from the Chimney put it in fire. There was another one where Fitzmaurice now lives, owned by Denis Lane. He also had one in Lavalla in the land now owned by Joe Horgan, this was burned. In the Winter when iron was very scarce they turned old shoes into new ones and these were called moulds. Two shoes were put on top of one another. They were slightly reddened and turned at the toe. Then they were heated to weld heat and drawn out again. At one time there was no iron to be got so they cut horse-bands for the shoes.
There are two forges in the village now. In these horse-shoes, and gates are made and ploughs, pots and kettles are mended. A shoe is made in the following manner:- The iron is cut with a "clift" and marked. It is then put into the fire and afterwards bent. Then it is drawn with the hammer and channeled with a "fuller". A stamp now is used to mae holes in the channel. If the holes close they are opened with a pritchel. If the iron is two long it is cut with a(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
