   Shops weren't very common in olden times; the people going about used to buy eggs at three for a penny. They used to exchange goods, for example give a calf for an ass and sometimes a few shillings "boot". Sometimes people got potatoes for their pay instead of money; this was the custom in olden days, or sometimes they were paid with flax, oats or some other farm produce.
   The Jews made a practice of taking the first money offered at the risk of their not getting full value for their ware
