1. The Potato Crop

   Potatoes are not grown very extensively in this district, though the land is very suitable for the production of the above named crop. Most of the farmers in this district grow an acre or an acre and a half of potatoes.

   The amount seldom or ever varies but occasionally when an number of farmers join and help one an another, they sow a larger quantity.

   Each farmer prepares the ground with the help of his sons or employers. The ground is always manured before being turned up. The way in which they convey the manure from the farmyard to the fields is by the horses and carts and if the land happens to be hilly asses and "parbógs" (square shaped wicker work baskets with slip bottoms) are used.

   The potatoes are sown in ridges the way in which the ridges are made is by turning one with the plough and occasionally two sods are turned. Then another sod is dug with an instrument known as a "loy" and the centre is filled with earth obtained from the furrow.
