- During the famine of 1846 and 1847 the potato crop of Ireland failed and hundreds died of starvation and hunger. When the potato failed they had to turn to Indian stirabout. They had no other food. Before the people died they got black from starvation and then died. Long ago coffins could not be got for all that were dying. Some of the people had to be burned in straw-mats.A little help of Indian-meal was given to the people each week by the Government. Each week they left a pot of Indian meal to a whole townland and between a whole parish sometimes. "A famine pot" s it was called is still to be seen in John Notley's field in Furnace.
