  1. The National School in Listowel was built in the year 1836. It is a two-storeyed limestone building. The site for the school was given by Lord Listowel. The upper floor of the school was reached by means of a stone staircase protected by an iron railing. The upper storey was used as a girls' school and the lower storey was used as a boys' school. When the nuns came to Listowel they built a school and the girls went to it. The upper storey was then used as a boys' school and the lower storey was used as a storeroom. The earliest records date back to the year 1856 and the principal teacher of that time was a man named Mr. O'Callaghan. In 1869 the floor of the lower school was boarded. The money for this purpose was a bequest of Mr. Humphrey O'Connor. The lower school was used as a junior school and the principal was a man named Mr. Lawlor.
