- In the same neighbourhood Mr O'Shea and myself came across a Fallagh-Fiadh where, long ago the deer was cooked and our ancestors ate their venison and told stories of the chase. The surveyor recognized its nature from the configuration of the ground - a field beside the road - a hollow "bed" with raised edges open at one end. It was then covered with grass as was the remainder of the field. The raised ends contained the refuse thrown to the side after the cooking.Digging here it was immediately apparent that the soil was different from the soil in the other part of the field. It was black with carbon. Burnt sticks and stones were unearthed and also some hand-querns, one good specimen of which was given to Dr. Costello of Tuam, the well known authority on such matters.
