- The Potato Crop. 25:4:'38 Potatoes are extensively grown in the Lagan district. Most farmers plant from about two to eight acres. The peasants plant about from half to one acre. At first, in Spring the ground is ploughed and harrowed. Then the farmer opens the drills and scatters manure in them. He plants the potato. The bigger potatoes are cut in two. Each half must have an "eye" in it. When the potato begins to grow, weeds also come up. They are then hoed to keep down the weeds. Later in Summer they are sprayed with "Blue Stone". This contains different substances which are good for the potato. This makes the potato bigger and better and also keeps the top's green longer. If they withered, the potato would be small. In Autumn the potatoes are dug with a potato digger, which is drawn with horses. Sometimes they are dug by ploughs or with spades. Men who have no plough must dig with spades, which is very slow and tiresome. ============== B. Phillips.
