Patrick Senior was Clerk of the Relief Committee during the Famine.The Kellys settled in Ballyare in 1830. They were evicted out of Corlea because the landlord saw that their black cattle were fatter than his own. The Corlea farmers fed the cattle on the grains left from poteen-making.There was no tea in those times. The food was, bread, butter, milk, eggs and bacon and porridge.
Wheat was grown all round here. It was ground in large mills but there were several querns or hand-mills. Indeed Mr Kelly remembers a hand-mill in every house. All the cloth was home-made. Most houses had two spinning wheels. The most noted weavers were the Sweeneys of Gleneely.- Bailitheoir
