- In olden times the country people lived chiefly on the produce of the land. They had a plentiful supply of milk and butter, oat meal and potatoes. They also grew flax and had it manufactured to make their clothes. Buying and selling were carried on at certain places after Mass and articles needed were bought, usually for money, but sometimes they were given in exchange for labour. Some local names for coins are, for a three-penny piece, "Kid's eye"; for a six-penny piece, "A tanner"; for a shilling, "A bob"; for a pound note, "A Banker".
