The old people here have heard of fairs being held on hills or near hills or castles. In Ballyhaunis the fairs are held in the fair-green. Toll is paid to a Mr. French on every animal sold. It is three-pence on a bonham and a such-calf; four pence on a yearling calf or under, and six-pence on a milck cow. The toll on a sheep is three-pence. Luck money is always given. Another name for it is the "luck-penny", because long ago the custom was to give a penny along with the silver. When an animal is sold the parties concerned show their aggreement by clapping hands or spitting on the money offered.
Cattle are sold in a place by themselves, and so are pigs, at the present time, but at one time they were sold with the cattle, horses, and sheep.- Bailitheoir
