  1. I live in the village of Derrynacong, in the parish of Ballyhaunis, in the barony of Costello and in the County of Mayo. There are eighteen houses in the village of Derrynacong. Seven are slated and the others thatched. There is one lake in the village, in Patrick Freeley's land, which was once owned by James Murphy. There is a story about that lake. There was once a rich man who had a castle where the lake now stands and he was very unkind to the poor.
One day a magician came to his house dressed like a beggar and begged for bread which the rich man refused. So the magician changed him into a swan and his house into a lake.
