  1. This is a large village consisting of twenty-four houses, it is situated along the main road that leads from Castlebar to Pontoon. It is divided into two parts, one half is called Ross West, and the other half is called Ross East. There are two shops and a Post Office in it.
The land is fairly good, and the bog is convenient, but there are scarcely any trees. The village got its name, as it is said to be a piece of land running out into a bog.
    The sirnames in the village are Morans (9) Devaneys (2) McHales (2) Carney (2) McDonnell (1) Faulkner (1) O'Donnell (1) Kineavey (1) Flynn (1) Blaine (1) Roache (1) Walshe (1).
Of these Blaines and Kineaveys are not original inhabitants.
