  1. The day of the regatta was one of sunshine and light breezes. Four boats left the island before noon. There were crowds of people promenading the quayside, we where apple women, thimble men, three-card-trick men, Tom Laurence and his airgun wheedled their halfpence. A fourtuneteller assisted by a bird, that picked the summary of thee inquaires fate of thousands of leaflets did a roaring trade.
