  1. This is a story about how St Martin was converted. He was an officer. One day, as a troop of soldiers and St Martin at their head were passing through a city, they saw a begger in the shade of the city wall.
    Some people looked upon him with disgust, others with pity. But St Martin stopped his horse, stooped down from the saddle and told the begger he had given all his money away in farewell gifts and charity. But he took hold of his cloak and tore it in
