  1. There are a great many forths in Clare. There are more forths in Clare than in the whole of Ireland. I often heard a story about forths. There was a boy cutting a tree near a forth, which his boss had sent him to cut. It was an old white thorn tree. When he had it nearly cut it fell upon him and everywhere the tree stabbed him he was blood-poisoned. His boss found him and got him taken into hospital. He was mad with pain.
