There was a poor soldier named James Grogan who used to stay in the houses and attend school. He was always leaving and used to pay for his keep by teaching the children of the house at night. He came from Knock, Co. Mayo. 1879 and had only one hand. He brought with him some of the plaster from the nall where the apparition appeared, and it used to have healing properties. He left and afterwards became Master of Clonemorris Union, Co. Mayo.
