- 1. Shrove Tuesday night is called Pancake Night, because it is the custom to fry a large dish of pancakes for tea. A ring is put into one of them and whoever gets it, will be married first.2. Matches are not made as often, now, as they were in days gone by during Shrove.3. A dowry is always given to the bride and cattle and stock is given to the bridegroom.4. The car in which the couple go away in was decorated with white ribbons in honour of the bride. Old shoes are tied on to the back of the car as symbols of luck and happiness.5. It was the custom for all the guests to ride on horse-back to the wedding.6. If the bride has to assist the bridegroom it is a sign, that he will be ruled by her in future.7. It was custom to carry the bride over the threshold of the door, when she arrived home.
