  1. Long ago the village of Shercock was where Lough Sillian now stands. At that time there was a well in the town, who never had its lid left open, because it is said that the people then, thought that if it was left open that it would flow over and drown the place. One day a woman left her baby asleep in its cradle and went to the well for some water. When she had the water lifted, she heard the baby crying and in her haste she forgot to put the lid on.
Then the water began to run out of the well, and it began to get very big, until the whole town was drowned. Then the new town was built overlooking Lough Sillian up on the hill. The old town is supposed to be down in the lake still.
