  1. There was a hiring market twice every year in this place. It is in the town it is held, on the Wednesday after the 17th of May, and the Wednesday after the 17th of November. The people who are going to hire stay in one place, and the hirers go to that place and pick out a suitable person. Then they ask them their name and age. What work they can do, the work they did in their last place. How often they were hired before, why they left their last place, and did they stay the full six months. Next they ask what wages they got last, and if they are pleased with them, they hire them at a wage. Then they give them earnest money, and when they take it, they cannot return the money, except the bargain is broken.
