  1. There were one storey thatched houses long ago. The thatch was got in the bogs. Most houses had a settle-bed in the kitchen. The fireplace was always at the gable, never any other place. The front of the chimney was always made of stones and mortar. The houses always had chimneys of some sort. There was always glass in the windows which were very small. The old floors were very bad, and made from clay. Half doors were used and are still. Shoves and seeds and sticks were burned. Rush candles were used for lighting purposes, but wax candles were never used.
