    Dying
    Dyes were manufactured in this district from penny leaves, ivy and laurel leaves. This was a black dye. The leaves were boiled and the article to be coloured was after wards immersed and boiled in the liquid. Washing soda was added. A dye called "puce" was made from boiling the bark of certain trees the elm tree was one of them.
    A yellow dye was made by boiling lichen or gorse leaves.
    A red dye was made by boiling wild poppies.
    Nail-making:
    This industry was carried on in this district in days gone by. The man who made the nails was locally known as a "nailer." The things he required were several lengths of wire of different size's; something that resembled a boot last; with a hole in top which could be adjusted to the size of the nail he wanted to make; a hammer and something to cut the wire. The wire was reddened before cutting.
