    A Song
    27th June, 1938
    At the Grotto
    I
The night is dark and piercing cold.
    A thousand stars look down,
On Granard's people, young and old.
    High up above the town.
Upon the Hill - historic spot.
    In shadow of the Moat.
Where Erin's sons were hung and shot.
    And Saxon tyrants smote.
    II
Why gather here this mighty Throng
    In cold and bitter air?
Why are their voices raised in song,
Their heads bowed down in prayer?
Look up and see, amid the rocks.
    The Virgins statue set
While, lower down the stony blocks,
    Kneels little Bernadette.
