- (continued from previous page)there. He got the wood from Knockdrin. Another man who made hurleys was Mr Downs from Balrath. He cut the hazel rods from the "Wood of the Seven Trees" so called because the trees were planted seven in a row.
The hazel sticks were cut the length of the hurley and the hurleys were cut out. They were then placed across the fire and kept moved all the time so they would not burn or scorch. When they were taken out resin was rubbed into them when hot to harden them. They had no way to round the handles and they used to nail on a piece of leather so as they would not hurt the hand of the men.Written by
