  1. There was rows of thatched houses in Mullingar long ago, and they stretched from Fielding's gate to Reddy's corner. The thatching used to be done by Darby Coffey and his son. Of the many rows of thatched houses, only one house is now standing. It is owned by Jack Falkner.
    There was also a row of thatched houses situated in Patrick St, and there is only one house still standing. It is owned by Mrs. Hope.
    Half-doors were on the majority of the houses, and they were locally called 'Hatch Doors'.
    Sticks and turf were burnt in the houses long ago, and the women of the town used to go out to Curraghmore bog, and gather baskets
