    Pat had to appear before the Resident Magistrate at the petty Sessions Court and was fined five shillings and costs or the Alternative of seven days in Kilmainham. Pat did not pay up the fine and had to go jail. After coming out he was asked by his neighbours why did he not pay up the fine. Pat answered in the following lines.
    On the 12th October in the year ninty-eight.
    The sergeant came and to me he did state.
    Pat now get ready and do not delay,
    And come on with me as the fine you won't pay.
    When asked what way he was treated in prison Pat again burst into poetry.
    If I was a poet and could ascertain.
    The jail allowance unto you I'd explain.
    A cup of cold water,
    Four ounces of bread,
    And then your hip bones upon a plank bed.
